The Dead Parent Test for Dialogue

The title of this post isn't the main topic of this video (but you should watch it anyway because it's good). I just thought it was interesting that somebody put a name to the movie dialogue technique where a character has to explain to the audience why a parent isn't around in the film. When it's done badly, it's said quickly and forgotten about with an exaggeration on details when none would have been fine in real life. It's just so weird every time it happens and I much prefer it to be more subtle or even unspoken and shown through other ways on screen.
