Caracas' notorious Tower of David is a vertical slum
Have you heard about this? There's a tall unfinished tower known as the Centro Financiero Confinanzas (or Tower of David) in Caracas, Venezuela that has been overtaken by the poor and homeless in the area as a lawless place of refuge. Remind you of any place?
The tower has been abandoned since 1994 due to Venezuela's banking crisis and squatters have brought in their families, businesses, gangs, and drugs to rule the place. No official sanctioned development has gone on there in about 20 or so years but the place seems to be beaming with life. Residents who live there walk up many flights of stairs to their homes which are all independently sectioned off and created. Power and water are supplied to residences through some handy self-crafting, and the entire place just generally sounds like it is straight out of Judge Dredd.
Amazing yet tragic at the same time.
