Citibike opens one lone docking station in Washington Heights

Citibike has just opened its latest docking bike station in Washington Heights right outside Columbia University Medical Center. It’s an effort to continue serving medical professionals traveling to and from the hospital amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

The unusual thing (for now) is that the station sits alone in Upper Manhattan. The next nearest station is about 50 blocks south. Given the slow nature of the bicycles and the area being one of the hilliest in the entire island of Manhattan, it would be an unfortunate disaster if you rode UP to Washington Heights on a Citibike and found the docking station full.

A quick look at New York City's electric pedal-assist Citibike

This past week, NYC unveiled its first electric pedal-assist Citibikes. The new bikes look almost the same as the latest generation of Citibikes except for a small black box which you turn on to enabled pedal-assist. This will be very welcome for bridge commuters.

If you want to find one, open up your Citibike app and look for the lightning bolt icon next to docking stations. If you see one, that means at least one electric bike is available. As of now though, they are limited and you have to seek them out.
