LinkNYC and its super-fast free Wi-Fi
A walk down a few popular neighborhoods in NYC will undoubtedly bring you face to face with LinkNYC's Wi-Fi kiosks. The city has made a major push to install these as quickly as possible and cover the city with free ad-free Wi-Fi access for every citizen. It's working. And it's working well, with speeds easily reaching college-level speeds. No longer do you have to go to the Apple store for free fast internet. Just sit at your local park, or camp out for a few minutes in front of a kiosk and enjoy these incredible speeds.
PS: NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo announced an initiative this morning for broadband access for all. LinkNYC seems to fall nicely into that idea.
LinkNYC super fast free Wi-Fi coming to NoMad
And not just to NoMad! I've been seeing these LinkNYC kiosks pop up all over -- Chelsea, Meatpacking, Midtown -- and probably more! I love that NYC is forging ahead with this widespread free super-fast Wi-Fi. I've used it and it's basically the fastest internet I've ever used (with interesting security features I've never seen rolled out before on public Wi-Fi) -- even faster than I remember on college campuses and the Apple Store. It's kind of incredible, actually.
NYC's free super-fast Wi-Fi really is crazy fast
OMG, do you see the numbers in this speed test for New York City's new LinkNYC free Wi-Fi? I don't think I've ever seen speeds like that anywhere. If this is how fast NYC's free Wi-Fi network is going to be in the future, I don't think there's going to be any reason for me to have to buy internet at all (assuming that this program gets rolled out to cover the entire city).
It's also pretty neat too that LinkNYC takes public Wi-Fi security so seriously. I felt pretty safe logging into their network with their security procedures (a few prompts on screen and an approved security certificate -- just do it, you'll see) and the entire process was quick and simple. If you're along 3rd Avenue around 15th Street, try it out.
NYC's free and fast public Wi-Fi kiosks are finally here
Slowly but surely, New York City is replacing dilapidated payphone kiosks with high-tech Wi-Fi portals. These portals known as LinkNYC are part of a city-wide initiative to give the public access to free Wi-Fi along with a number of city services and information all in one place.
The very first LinkNYC stations have been set up along 3rd Avenue beginning at 15th Street and running north along the Avenue. While there are a number of stations set up, only the 15th Street corner one is turned on and operational. If you're closeby, you can connect to the city's free Wi-Fi and enjoy for as long as you want. And if you're running out of juice on your phone, these kiosks have USB charging ports.
Best of all, the kiosks allow for free VoIP phone calls -- so the purpose of the old payphones still sort of lives on.
