The Salton Sea
I just wanted to take some time out of this Monday morning to highlight a great podcast episode from 99% Invisible about the Salton Sea.
The Salton Sea has been one of my favorite places I've ever visited in all of the US. Mainly because it's both a beautiful place (the sunsets here are crazy because of the hazy atmosphere) and also extremely ugly in some parts. There's tons to explore (if that's you're thing -- it's mine) and there's just so much weird history surrounding the area. If you don't know about how the Salton Sea came to be, the podcast does an excellent job of filling you in.
Have a look at these photos below as you listen to the podcast.
Tangerine Director Sean Baker makes a short film for KENZO in Slab City
Tangerine director Sean Baker made a short film for fashion label KENZO and filmed the entire thing Slab City, just outside The Salton Sea. This area is one of my favorites on earth both for its aesthetic and also for its weirdness (trust me, it's weird).
The 11-minute short film is called Snowbird and it stars model Abbey Lee (from Mad Max: Fury Road).
Remembering 2012 and that one song I played over and over again
The year 2012. What a different time in my life.
This song from Kitten will forever be one of my favorite songs and it will always remind me of moving to Los Angeles. To be honest, I don't really remember how I discovered KITTEN. It's very possible that it was through YouTube, but also just as likely that I discovered them through Spotify which I began using heavily at the time. In 2012 and into 2013, G# became one of the most played tunes on Spotify and I was obsessed with the music video when it came out. I remember sitting at nights in my lonely LA apartment feeling sad and listening to this song on repeat. It made me feel a lot better (and it made me want to drive to the desert).
This music video for G# is filmed in one of the most amazing and beautiful and smelly places on earth -- The Salton Sea. I miss it. I'm going to go back there in February!
