Transit 4.0 is now out

A little late with this post, but in case you haven't heard, Transit 4.0 is out. The latest version is a major update to the best transit app in the world (I personally recommend it to New Yorkers and tourists alike). This new version includes a new feature called GO which uses your phone's location to give you up-to-the-minute data about your trip. Things like when to start walking to your stop or when to get ready to get off the train or even when you are going to be late to your destination because of unforeseen track troubles. All of this, of course, is working alongside Transit's insane amount of real-time train and bus tracking which they've built into the app.

Oh, and if you're a user who just hasn't made the upgrade yet, you should. There's a new look, a new logo, and a new color to enjoy.

How the Transit app beat Apple and Google at making the best looking transit maps

Transit vs Apple Maps vs Google Maps

A few months back, a Twitter follower of mine asked me which app would be best for them to use if they were visiting New York. My immediate answer? Transit. As a New Yorker, I try my best to not use a map if I don't have to, but every once in a while the situation calls for it. And where do I turn to most? Transit. I always liked that the app because it gave me public transportation routes for every single mode possible. For NYC, it didn't just focus on trains, it also suggests ride-share apps, commuter rail, and Citibike. That's a big deal when sometimes taking the Subway and a bus might take longer.

The designers behind the Transit app just posted something on Medium detailing their painstaking work to create an algorithm that makes beautiful maps which is also part of the draw of using the app. It's just nice to look at. Google Maps is already pretty great, but Transit is just one step ahead of it. You can thank smooth curves for that. Read up about it here.

The old NYC MTA logo

Photo: Herman Yung

This picture here shows two overlapping MTA logos, one that is a little more recent and one that is old, bold, and awesome. The awesome one is the giant M outline you see. Some Subway trains still show this logo on the exterior of the train and it always brings a smile to my face when I see it. It's like a forgotten part of NYC Subway history that just keeps on going and going despite an obvious change designated by the higher-ups.

Here's a much cleaner version of the logo. You can download an EPS file of it here.
