SKYtech High Powered Laser Pointers
A funny thing happens when you try to review a laser pointer in NYC. You either review the whole damn thing indoors or risk being targeted by NYPD for pointing it into the sky (because c'mon, it's a laser pointer, why wouldn't you want to?). Obviously, for the safety of pilots and other aircraft in the NYC area, I kept this one indoors or at the very least pointed it horizontally if I was shooting it outside (this brings up some other issues...).
So what do I know about lasers? Well, nothing! Nothing useful for anybody concerned about specs. But what I can tell you is that lasers are both practical tools and fun accessories to own. How many instances do you know where you can call a tool a fun thing to use?
But onto the part you probably came here to read. This laser here is by a lovely company called SKYTech. They make a few laser pointers and this one is their standard budget variety. I wouldn't have known that though if I hadn't read that on their site because this laser is super duper don't-shine-it-on-a-white-wall bright. This version comes with a single button which controls 3 operations: a low-powered mode (bright), a high-powered mode (BLINDING), and an SOS blinking-mode (bright). In a dark room or location, the low-powered setting will allow you to see a faint beam while the high-powered mode shows a visible beam even without a completely dark setting. If you've got a cat, this can mean many hours of fun and exercise...
If you're a technical person, you can get the lowdown of the official specs here for all 4 color variations. As for what a regular person like me thinks of this thing? I like it a lot. It's built well and the form factor is no larger than a thick marker. I opted for the blue version because it just looks cool in daylight and in the dark. And like I said, it's crazy bright even at the low setting. My only real gripe is the button operation (which just comes down to personal preference really). I wish I didn't have to hold it down to get to the high powered setting mainly because sometimes, for whatever reason, the long press doesn't register on the laser pointer and I waste about 2-3 seconds before I know I have to lift up and depress again.
Other than that, SKYtech makes a fine laser point. Get it as a gift, go one up from this version here and get something that really shines bright. Great for pointing at things far away and also just a ton of fun to show off for no reason at all!
