So many great reasons to bike in NYC
I can relate to almost every reason mentioned in this video for the increase in biking activity in NYC. This city has made huge strides to protect cyclists and make riding a bike a pleasurable experience despite the hectic traffic. :)
Levi's will ship the Google Jacquard smart jacket in Spring 2017
Levi's has announced that this coming fall, the Project Jacquard smart jacket will be released in a limited beta testing phase. The hope is for the jacket, with smart fabric woven into it, to go into full production by Spring 2017.
The jacket allows wearers to control smartphone functions with hand motions. The concept developed in partnership with Google is targeted at cyclists who need to keep their eyes on the road while still answering calls, getting directions, and changing music on their ride.
Chrystie Street will finally get a 2-way bike lane off the Manhattan Bridge
I cannot wait for this. According to Bowery Boogie, Chrystie Street will finally get a 2-way bike lane that connects directly to the Manhattan Bridge.
The green bike lane will run along Sara D. Roosevelt Park and have protection from parked cars and jersey barriers. This is a much-needed improvement to the street which has seen many cyclists (myself included) dark across the two-way vehicular road in order to ride the wrong way on the current one-lane bike lane onto the entrance to the Manhattan Bridge (whew, that was sort of a mouthful).
The improvements will supposedly open in fall 2016.
Streets of Chrome videos
I've been enjoying these videos below from Chrome featuring select riders and their stories of why they ride and where they ride their bikes. Maybe you will enjoy them too! After a long week of work and bad weather here in NYC, these videos make me want to get on a bike and ride, ride, ride.
MASH 2015 - Bombing the hills of SF with colored smoke
I always wondered what the legal criteria was for pulling a stunt like this. I mean, technically, it's gotta be a road hazard right? I've thought about doing something like this before especially since Enola Gaye smoke grenades are so easily had and cheap. For those who have never used these, they last for about 2 minutes before going caput. Maybe I should get some of these for camping.
Kryptonite Gravity WheelNutz can only be taken off if your bike is upside-down
Nothing wrong with my current Pinhead wheel locks, but while I'm in the process of upgrading some components on my bike, why not look around and see what else can be replaced? Maybe these Kryptonite Gravity WheelNutz are a good idea? These wheel locks are unique in that they use gravity as the locking mechanism. When the bike is right side up, the nuts can be tightened, but never loosened. And if you're bike is properly locked, flipping your bike over to loosen the lock is virtually impossible.
I like this mainly because it means I don't have to carry an additional Pinhead "key" with me at all times. The Pinhead key is big and bulky and clunky. It'd be nice to just use a standard sized tool to unlock the bike -- as long as I can flip the bike over.
