How Samy Kamkar took down Myspace with a virus in 2005
I don't know the story of Samy Kamkar very well, but I do remember the insane media story about him "hacking" Myspace and getting a ton of friends. He's shown here in this new Motherboard series about famous hacking moments in history explaining what the ordeal really was. A simple bit of code that ended up wreaking havoc on an entire company.
But I'm wondering if his punishment was way too severe for exploiting code. I mean, sure it took down an entire website, but to ban him completely from computers and the internet and do over 700 hours of community service? That punishment seems more than the act itself. No?
Mission Chinese's website looks like Myspace
As a restaurant website, this fails miserably. But as a fun internet joke, this is pretty good.
