The last giant donut shops in LA

5 Giant Donuts in LA

NBC LA has a quick report on the infamous Randy's Donuts in Inglewood and in this report I learned that Randy's was part of a larger chain of donut shops that all had the same programmatic architecture style (translation: it looks like what it sells). That means that other than Randy's Donuts, there are at least 4 other giant donut shops in the LA area.

  • Kindle's Donuts
  • Donut King 2
  • Dale's Donuts
  • Bellflower Bagels

PS: Yes, one of them is a bagel store. Can't wait to see these!

Randy's Donuts in Inglewood

Last day in LA. Had a chance to visit Henry J. Goodwin's Randy's Donuts building in Inglewood (UP TO NO GOOD!). I just read the Wikipedia entry for this building and it explains the appeal of this building to a certain extent. It is a prime example of programmatic architecture -- that is, making buildings in the shape of odd things, usually in the form of the food or items being sold inside the establishment. In this case, if it wasn't obvious from the name, it's donuts.

I always like driving by this landmark building in LA because well, when do you get to see a giant donut staring down at you? And sometimes, if you fly into LA during the day, you can see this structure from the airplane window since it's so close to LAX. Imagine that for a second. Nothing but palm trees and rooftops and then suddenly, BAM, a giant donut. Something about that has to make you chuckle and appreciate its appeal.
