James Curran's LA Gifathon

Remember James Curran? He's the artist who created 30 wonderful animated GIFs of NYC which spread like wildfire a few months back. If you haven't been following him on Twitter, you should know that he's been doing basically the same thing -- one animated GIF a day -- of Los Angeles.

His animated GIFs are just fun to watch as they loop over and over again. I have a feeling he'll put them all into one big video at the end of this month like he did with the NYC GIFs, but for now, you can see them all separately on his Twitter.

The new animated GIF renaissance

OMG! I've been meaning to find some time and reason to write about this fantastic podcast episode from Reply All about the animated GIF juggernaut, Animation Factory! And now, Vox Media has given me a supplemental video to fill the void!

Here is a great summary of the journey of the humble animated GIF in the not-so-long internet history. From really jagged and terrible-looking globe GIFs to the 3-second screengrab of a YouTube video, animated GIFs have come a very long way from just a graphic on a website to an incredibly valuable expressive medium on the internet. I like GIFs. You should too!

GIPHY Keys launches free keyboard app on iOS

GIPHY has quickly become one of my favorite apps of the past year. Now, they have released an integrated keyboard addition for iOS that makes it even easier to insert GIFs into chats, emails, and other input areas on iOS.

I think you should download it.

Onto a related topic though: It looks like the common pronunciation of "GIF" really is now said with a hard "G" sound. Despite the GIF creator's insistence that it be pronounced like "JIF" (as in the peanut butter), there's a growing community of people who are insisting that the creator is wrong.
