Tons of archival footage of NYC in the '70s, '80s, and '90s
The Kinolibrary Archive Film collections has been uploading a lot of archival footage lately of NYC. There's no sound, but the preservation of an older NY is always fun to watch.
An extra bonus from 2000...
Inside the Library of Congress' film preservation vault
Pretty neat look into the Library of Congress Packard Campus vault where film negatives are stored to be kept forever.
Trump Twitter Archive
The Trump Twitter Archive seems like a useful archiving tool especially since it looks like Trump has no intention to willfully follow the Presidential Records Act.
WNYC's full 14-hour broadcast from 9/11
WNYC has a 14-hour recording of their reporting on 9/11 to listen to if you would like to hear how the day unfolded to radio listeners.
The audio above is a recording of what WNYC broadcast throughout the day on September 11, 2001, beginning shortly after the first plane struck the World Trade Center. It includes the first eyewitness account of the attacks recorded and broadcast that day.
WNYC's radio tower was located at the top of the World Trade Center and broadcast was cut on FM wavelengths after the building was attacked. However, WNYC was still broadcasting on their AM channel which you can hear in the recording.
EDIT: If you want, you can also check out CBS' 1010WINS news broadcast from that morning.
Geocities still exists as a 652GB torrent file
This makes me happy. I guess I never followed up on my own about what was going on with the whole GeoCities shutdown back in 2009. I remember there being quite a big collaborative effort to save all the data on GeoCities in order to preserve its history. I was all for it. GeoCities was the birthplace of the personal homepage. It made personal webpages attainable and contributed in large part to the spread of animated GIFs and an aesthetic that has recently made a big comeback with vaporwave.
Anyway, if you want to download the 652GB file, you can do so freely via The Pirate Bay.
Or, if you're like me, you can browse the GeoCities archive online.
