The language of facial expressions in cinema
Andrew Saladino has an amazing exposé about why cinema stands out among other forms of media. His main point? That it can convey emotions without using words or sounds.
Lady Gaga at Yale's Emotion Revolution Summit
I searched for this longer full video because I saw a good snippet of it posted elsewhere. The video I saw features Lady Gaga on stage at Yale University's Emotion Revolution Summit talking about why she essentially quit the music industry (that portion starts at around the 9:30 mark in the video above). I don't get the sense that she has quit the music industry at all, but her reasons for doing so reveal so much tension between herself and the industry as a whole. Lots of fakeness and worthless banter all around.
The summit is a place to gather people to "build awareness of the critical role emotions play in young people’s learning, decision-making, academic achievement, and overall wellness". A noble task that I think Lady Gaga handled very well with an eloquent talk and a great Q&A session. If you thought she was just Lady Gaga from all those music videos, you're very wrong.
This computer program can put your expressions on someone else's face
This isn't perfect by any means but it's still amazing to watch in real-time as a computer figures out how to map one person's facial expressions onto another person's face. This isn't replacing a face with another face. This is replacing emotions on a face with emotions from a different face -- much more complicated it seems and much harder to make look realistic.
Although the teeth and eyes sometimes still weird me out (it's that uncanny valley poking its head out), the movements do look pretty good. I could see this being used in movies and video games very soon.
