Using the new Mac Pro for photogrammetry
This is an interesting review of the Mac Pro by putting it through an image building process known as photogrammetry while editing a massive HDR video project. Unsurprisingly, the new Mac Pro handles both tasks near flawlessly and even builds the photogrammetry in record time (about 20 hours compared to the usual 2-3 days).
PhotoScan from Google uses your smartphone as a clever scanner for printed photos
PhotoScan by Google Photos is an app that uses your smartphone to "scan" printed photos to keep in digital form. The app works incredibly well, doing away with glare and reflections even if the photo is behind glass or in a picture frame. It's one of those apps that truly made me go "Wow!" in surprise because it really did just work as advertised. The scans are of decent quality too -- great for social media sharing. Don't expect ultra-HD scans though. For that, you'll still need a proper scanner.
What would happen in the aftermath of the digital information age?
Wow, watch this short video from Nimblefox about a future where the digital information age collapses. It's eye-opening and thought-provoking. Especially when I remember that almost everything I do nowadays is digital. And as a photographer, I hardly ever make prints unless they are part of a specific body of work. But all the in-between shots and all of the "less important" stuff actually is important to me. What if I lost it all to a systematic failure of disks? Freaky! It certainly makes me think twice about storing everything on my computer. Maybe I should start printing everything. But...the clutter. Yikes.
