The Art of The Iron Giant
I want this book. It reminds me of the time I went to go see this in theaters. I dozed off at one point but the experience was a memorable one because up until that point I had always wished that I had seen this movie in theaters when it was originally released.
From some of the user-submitted photos on Amazon, I can tell that this book is a treasure trove of amazing concept art that helped shape what is probably one of my favorite films of all time.
Salvador Dali's surrealist cookbook being re-issued by Taschen
My Modern Met just shared news of Taschen releasing Salvador Dali's surrealist cookbook, Dalí: Les Diners de Gala. The book was published originally in 1973 and has been out of print for quite some time.
Taschen writes:
This reprint features all 136 recipes over 12 chapters, specially illustrated by Dalí, and organized by meal courses, including aphrodisiacs. The illustrations and recipes are accompanied by Dalí’s extravagant musings on subjects such as dinner conversation: “The jaw is our best tool to grasp philosophical knowledge.”
Sounds pretty neat! If you enjoy the weird and truly bizarre with your meals, maybe you might want to pre-order this Dali cookbook now.
Atlas Obscura: An Explorer's Guide To The World's Hidden Wonders
I've been a big fan of Atlas Obscura for a while and when I first heard that they were coming out with a book, I immediately put it at the top of my must-have and must-read list. The site, for those who don't know, is an incredible resource for those who love to travel and see beautiful, interesting, and straight-up weird things. Authors Joshua Foer, Dylan Thuras, and Ella Morton have done an amazing job compiling over 600 things into this single thick volume that really serves to highlight some of the best locations that Atlas Obscura has written about over the years. The book is organized by country and region which really helps make the book a worthwhile travel companion if you know roughly the area you are traveling in (if it was in alphabetical order, this would be incredibly hard to find useful).
At the beginning of the book co-founders Joshua Foer and Dylan Thuras explain their goal with Atlas Obscura -- to create a wunderkammer, a sort of cabinet of curiosities -- and this is exactly what this book is. Every page turn evokes a sense of adventure and longing to go to all of these wild and wonderful places. If you're itching to travel but don't know where to start, the Atlas Obscura book will be a fantastic way to narrow down some options.
I really love this book and I would highly recommend you pick it up. Bring it with you the next time you travel!
Amazon Prime now includes access to a plethora of unlimited e-books
For the first time in years, I let my Amazon Prime membership lapse. I use it a lot, but lately, I guess I just didn't feel like I needed to renew it right away when it expired earlier last month. Well, this new Prime reading feature makes me want to sign up again. I've let go of the one-book-a-month thing but that doesn't mean I don't want to read. And reading for "free" sounds like a pretty good deal.
Horn Please: The Decorated Trucks of India
Just can't get enough of this Horn Please documentary. I found out there's a book too! The book contains tons of photos by Dan Eckstein of these magnificent looking trucks and is a true inspiration to anybody looking for some next-gen lettering technique.
August Wilson's 'Fences' starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis
Oh man! I had no idea that August Wilson's play Fences was being made into a feature film! This is the greatest movie news I've heard all month! I loved reading this book and knowing that Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, two incredible actors, are going to be starring in it...well, this just makes the upcoming movie seem even sweeter!
Christmas 2016! I cannot wait to see this! Will definitely be a must-see-in-theaters flick for me.
