Detroit Public Schools: A District In Crisis

Loveland has a very interesting report on Detroit public schools going as far back as 1842. The data is mined from public resources and put into a very digestible format along with amazing photos and anecdotes about how the Detroit public school system started, rose to prominence, and quickly fell to the wayside during economic and social hardships facing the city.

The report can be viewed online and is also available in book form from Blurb for $100 (with a few extras). There's also a really neat gallery of Detroit public schools as they appear today.

I miss this city. I can't wait to go back.

JR's Inside Out Project goes to PS 63 Star Academy and Neighborhood School in the East Village

Photos by Herman Yung

I feel like the East Village's PS 63 Star Academy and Neighborhood School has been under construction and scaffolding for a long time. Well, this past month, JR and his Inside Out project spiced up the exterior of the construction zone with individual school portraits of the students that go there.

The exterior of PS 63 is now covered in about 200 giant portraits all taken inside JR's custom Inside Out photo truck. What a wonderful thing for the neighborhood and the kids. Check out some photos I took below.
