More on those VFD displays
How to program a VFD display.
I mentioned earlier that I’ve been a little obsessed with VFD displays. The “retro” technology reminds me of MiniDiscs and other ‘80s-’90s tech before color displays became the norm. They simultaneously look low-resolution and high-resolution with the refresh rate often being quite high it seems.
This video above explains how to buy one and program it while the video below shows how they still exist in a lot of appliances and cheap tech today.
Look at these guys ring a 34,000-pound bell
BIG BELL!
I don’t really have anything to add here. Just a cool video.
Exploring the abandoned Miami Marine Stadium
A relic on the Miami waterfront.
I’ve wanted to explore this place for so long but every time I’m in Miami, there just isn’t enough time to head out that way.
Phil A. O’Fish McDonald’s mascot
A short-lived McDonald’s fish mascot.
I was too young to remember this, but for a very short time in McDonald’s history, they advertised the famed Filet-O-Fish with a uniform-wearing fish named Phil A. O’Fish.
Also, I recently posted a video about whether the Filet-O-Fish is actually fish.
Three WTC towers on this Rite-Way demolition truck
I love these trucks!
I seriously love these Rite-Way demolition trash trucks. Bright yellow, immaculately hand-painted signage, and this wonderfully drawn WTC tribute that not only includes the old World Trade Center towers but also the new 1 WTC.
Why do movies look so bad now?
HDR in modern film making is making our movies look worse.
I actually thought about this as I watched the first part of Wicked recently. The movie looked “bright” but not quite colorful to my eye and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
As it turns out, a lot of people felt the same way and a lot of the blame seems to be settling on a few areas of the filmmaking process, notably the colorist and the cinematography.
